Start Here With Us

forget_me_not-heartFollowing the 2015 Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) Conference, Tina Williams called Mary Beth Riedner, the luncheon keynote speaker at the conference. Mary Beth is a retired librarian and the Chair of the Interest Group for Alzheimer’s & Related Dementias (iGARD), a group in ALA’s Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA). This interest group focuses on creating, disseminating, and implementing guidelines for library services to people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. The International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) has already established such guidelines and they can readily be adapted for use in the United States. We discussed the importance of a continuing conversation between librarians on how we can serve those with dementia and their caretakers. Mary Beth asked if we would be willing to start a state-wide conversation among librarians. In 2016, Tina called upon David Kelsey to co-chair a new group in the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) called “Serving Patrons with Dementia.”

“Serving Patrons with Dementia” is a group of library staff dedicated to bringing services and information together. We meet to share and discuss the unique needs of serving the caregivers and those suffering with dementia and Alzheimer’s. We meet to share programming ideas, collection development ideas, marketing tips, and ways to partner with community organizations.

Along the way we have been inspired by librarians like Mary Beth who are leading the way and libraries that have already established programming: Gail Borden Public Library, Ela Area Public Library, Arapahoe Libraries, and the Aurora Public Library. We have relied on the experts working for the Alzheimer’s Association and local memory care facilities.

This website is designed to include all of the David Tina.jpg
information being collected along this journey with our fellow librarians. Please join us in sharing these resources and ideas. Share your stories and ideas with us via email:
